EFIS Highlights: Autumn Events & Community News

As autumn unfolds, we’re excited to share what EFIS has planned for the coming months. At the end of October, the 14th EFIS/EJI South East European Immunology School will take place, offering a rich scientific and social program. In November, we look forward to EFIS on Tour in Bucharest, Romania — stay tuned for details as we hope to welcome our Romanian colleagues as well as friends from neighboring countries.

In this newsletter, you’ll also find updates from our member societies, as well as news from yEFIS, which has recently elected a new board, along with a call for the ACTERIA Awards.

Looking further ahead, don’t forget to save the date for ECI 2027 in Florence, September 2027, where our Italian colleagues from SIICA have already kicked off planning for this major immunology congress.

SEEIS 2025: Fostering Science, Education & Networking

EFIS is looking forward to welcome participants of the 14th EFIS/EJI South East European Immunology School (SEEIS 2025) on October 24th in Seferihisar, Türkiye. SEEIS2025 will offer an insightful and enjoyable program to foster scientific exchange, education and networking among young researchers, PhD students, and early-career doctors.

The Call for Applications for the 2026 ACTERIA Doctoral Thesis Prizes is Now Open!

The ACTERIA Doctoral Thesis Prizes, awarded by EFIS, honor the best doctoral theses in immunology and allergology defended at European institutions within the past three years. Winners receive a €30,000 cash award, plus the possibility of up to €50,000/year for three years to fund a research project at a European institution. Application deadline: 31 December 2025. EFIS Society News

The British Society for Immunology (BSI) warmly invites colleagues from across Europe and beyond to attend BSI Congress 2025 at ACC Liverpool. This flagship event will bring together over 1,500 immunology professionals from around the globe to share cutting-edge research, spark collaborations, and celebrate progress in our field.
Highlights include a keynote lecture from Yasmine Belkaid, plus a diverse programme of talks, workshops, and networking opportunities.

Heartfelt congratulations to Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for receiving the Nobel Prize in Medicine 2025 for their discoveries on peripheral immune tolerance!

Shimon Sakaguchi has been closely associated with the German Society for Immunology (DGfI) for many years and is actively engaged in bilateral exchange with the Japanese Society for Immunology. We are very proud and overjoyed that he has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine this year. This honor is richly deserved and celebrates one of the most groundbreaking discoveries of recent decades — a discovery with extraordinary impact and transformative potential for clinical application. DGfI Spring School on Immunology - Ettal, Bavaria, March 15-20, 2026

An advanced training in specialized immunological topics for scientists with solid knowledge of immunology, e.g. doctoral students in their last year, early postdocs, clinician scientists and researchers from industry. Held in the beautiful Ettal monastery in the Bavarian Alps, the Spring School provides dedicated time to meet and discuss with the faculty members and offers excellent opportunities for networking and exchange among young researchers in the immunology community. IUIS-DGfI stipends for students from developing countries

Through joint sponsorship by IUIS and the DGfI we are able to offer 3 full scholarships for participation in the Spring School 2026 for applicants from low to middle income countries who are studying/working in these countries. Deadline for application: Nov 2, 2025


The Irish Society for Immunology’s 2025 annual meeting was hosted by University of Galway and brought together 220 established and early‐career immunologists. There were four main thematic sessions - Host‑Pathogen Immunology; Immunity & Inflammation; Multi‑omics in Immunology and Stromal / Cancer Immunology.Keynotes were delivered by Sarah Walmsley, Rachel McLoughlin, William Agace, John O’Shea, Adam Byrne, Marcus Claesson, Fiona Powrie, Michael O’Dwyer, Karen English, Emma Kerr and Patrick Forde.Over two days we showcased excellent science and the growing complexity and advancements in Irish immunology. Future progress will depend on emerging technologies and discovery as well as collaboration and translation.


56th Annual Meeting of the French Society for Immunology which will take place from 12 to 14 November 2025 at the ‘La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie’ located at Porte de la Villette in the north of Paris.Registration is still possible.
